Electric Actuators: Bosch Opts for Vitronic’s Inspection Technology!

Bosch is using six VINSPEC automated inspection units from Vitronic to ensure the flawless production of its new piezoelectric actuators. Piezoelectric actuators work in car engine fuel injection systems to reduce fuel consumption, noise, and carbon emissions. They make for clean, efficient running vehicles.

What is piezoelectricity?
Piezoelectricity is the ability of some materials to generate an electric field in response to applied mechanical stress. This effect is reversible – such materials produce mechanical stress in response to an applied electric field.

How do piezoelectric actuators work?
A vehicle’s fuel injection system injects pressurised fuel into the engine cylinder through a valve in precise quantities at precise intervals. Traditional injection systems open and close this valve using electromagnets. Bosch’s new actuators use piezoelectricity to control the valve quicker and more accurately than traditional systems, which makes for an efficient engine.

Foil printing
Bosch’s new actuators consist of stacks of special piezoelectric ceramic foils printed with strip electrodes, and guide marks to ensure accurate stacking. After printing, a robotic gripper deposits foils on a conveyor. Fast line-scan cameras from Vitronic capture high-resolution images of each as they travel along.
The first VINSPEC system inspects these images to identify flaws on foils, such as holes, missing print, and bleeding. It also checks the position of the strip electrodes and guide marks. If the foils pass all inspections, they are dried and sent for stacking. Faulty foils are unusable, so VINSPEC immediately discards them.

Precise automated stacking
Robotic grippers then stack several foils into a block on a positioning table. Accurate stacking is essential to ensure actuators function correctly. By analysing images acquired by its cameras, the second VINSPEC system identifies a foil’s guide marks and calculates its position, before instructing the robotic grippers to stack the foils precisely. Completed stacks are laminated. This causes the foils to harden and form solid blocks. Without using the machine vision system VINSPEC it wouldn’t be possible to produce functional actuators.

Raw actuator processing
Next, a specially coated saw automatically divides the hardened blocks into bars and then into so-called ‘raw actuators’. Cutting bars into raw actuators is a delicate process. An incorrect cut can interrupt the strip electrodes and render actuators unusable. The third VINSPEC system captures photographic images of foil blocks, measures each bar to the nearest micrometer, and coordinates the saw to product precise cuts.
The fourth VINSPEC system inspects the function and quality of the raw actuators before sending them for further processing. Checks include actuator dimensions and electrode position. Only flawless actuators pass to the next production stage.

Final production stages
Bosch applies a layer of insulation finish and electrical strip contacts to actuators before installing them into the fuel injectors. Finish must be evenly applied and bubble free. Strip contacts require careful soldering and must be clear of finish. Defects lead to short circuits, which render actuators unusable. The fifth and sixth VINSPEC units monitor these processes, and immediately discard faulty actuators.

Complete control
Operators can observe the inspections on monitors at each VINSPEC station. Graphical user interfaces mean results, live photographic images, and system status reports are all easily accessible, allowing operators to intervene if they detect production discrepancies. All inspection results are stored, allowing Bosch to produce statistical evaluations and optimise its manufacturing processes.

Electric Actuators: Ball Valve's Installation and Maintenance Introduction

1), Check the preparation work before installation
1. Make sure the installation site pipeline is coaxial and the two flanges on the pipeline should keep parallel; confirm the pipeline could support the ball valve's weight. If not, an appropriate support needs to be equipped on the pipeline before installation.
2. Confirm whether there is impurity and welding slag, etc or not in the pipeline. For it must be clean.
3. Check the ball valve's nameplate and do full open and full close operation on ball valve for several times. Check it could be normal operation and excellent without damage.
4. Wash and examine the valve inside is clean after removing protected cover both ends of the valve. For the ball valve's sealing face is ball shape, even a tiny sundry could damage the sealing face.

2),Installation
1. Any part of the ball valve could be fixed at the upstream ends and the hand lever ball valve could be fixed at any position of pipeline. If the ball valve needs to be equipped with actuator (gearbox or electric, pneumatic actuator), the actuator must be vertical. The valve import and export should be in a horizontal position.
2. The flanges and pipeline flanges are designed according to pipeline, which need to equip packing seal.
3. The bolts on the flange should be screwed down symmetrically, gradually, uniformly.
4. If the valve adopts electric actuator, pneumatic actuator or hydraulic actuator, please equipping the air supply and main supply according to instruction.

3),The inspection after installation
1. Finishing the installation, please start the open and close operation several times and you should do it flexibly so that the stress will be uniform and the operation will be normal.
2. According to pipeline pressure design, test the performance of ball valve and pipe flanges' junction surface after pressure opening.

4),Maintenance
1. Only unrig the ball valve's inlet and outlet pressure, and then you could do dismantling operation.
2. At the process of dismantlement and reassembling, you need to protect the valve with sealing spare part, especially the nonmetal, just as o-ring, which would better use the special tool.
3. When the valve body is reassembled, the bolts need to be screwed down symmetrically, gradually, uniformly.
4. The cleaning agent should be compatible with ball valve's rubber, plastics, mental and working media (fuel gas), etc. When the working media is fuel gas, you could choose gas (GB484-89) to clean mental spare parts. While the non mental could be cleaned by purified water or alcohol.
5. Some single parts that dismantled may be cleaned by baptism. Some mental with non mental that has not been dismantled use the silk with cleaning agent to clean it (avoid the fiber drop off and conglutinate to the spare parts). So when you clean it, please wipe off the things (oil, bilge, gum deposit, dust) on the wall.
6. When the non mental parts finish cleaning, they should be taken out of the cleaning agent at once and should not be dipped in for a long time.
7. Finish washing, you should wait until the cleaning agent on the wall volatilizes entirely and then go on equipping (or use the silk without cleaning agent to clean it). But the time could last long, otherwise the valve will be rust and polluted by the air.
8. Some new spare parts also need to be cleaned before equipment.
9. Use lube to make it smooth. The lube should be compatible with ball valve's rubber, plastics, mental and working media (fuel gas), etc. When the working media is fuel gas, you could use lube-221. Next coating a layer of lube on the surface of sealing install rabbet, on the surface of rubber sealing and on the stem's sealing face and rubbing face.
10. During equipping, it is not allowed to let the metal chips, oil (except prescriptive ones), fiber, dust and any other impurity to pollute, adhere to or stay on the surface of the parts or let it inside.

Actuators are used for the automation of industrial valves and can be used in all kinds of technical process plants such as wastewater treatment plants, power plants and even refineries. The valves to be automated vary both in design and dimension. The diameters of the valves range from a few inches to a few meters.

Multi-turn actuators are required for the automation of multi-turn valves. One of the major representatives of this type is the gate valve. "A multi-turn actuator is an actuator which transmits to the valve a torque for at least one full revolution. It is capable of withstanding thrust."

Part-turn actuators are required for the automation of part-turn valves. Major representatives of this type are butterfly valves and ball valves. "A part-turn actuator is an actuator which transmits a torque to the valve for less than one full revolution. It need not be capable of withstanding thrust."

Currently there is no international standard describing linear actuators or linear thrust units. A typical representative of the valves to be automated is the control valve. Just like the plug in the bathtub is pressed into the drain, the plug is pressed into the plug seat by a stroke movement. The pressure of the medium acts upon the plug while the thrust unit has to provide the same amount of thrust to be able to hold and move the plug against this pressure. Most of the linear actuators used are pneumatic diaphragm actuators. They are characterized by a simple design principle and are therefore cost-effective. A compressed air supply is a prerequisite for their use. In case this is not possible, the use of thrust units is recommended which can easily be supplied with power.

Small electric actuators can be used in a wide variety of assembly, packaging and testing applications. Such actuators can be linear, rotary, or a combination of the two, and can be combined to perform work in three dimensions. Such actuators are often used to replace pneumatic cylinders.

Electric actuators: Different Types of Actuators

An actuator is used to put something into automatic action. It is a mechanism by which an agent that can be either an artificial intelligence agent or any other autonomous being acts upon an environment. Meanwhile, it is the final element in a control system that can receive a low power command signal and energy input to expand the command signal as appropriate to produce the required output.

Like other things, there are also various types of actuators. The first type I have to mention is the linear actuator. It is a device that applies force in a linear manner, as opposed to rotationally like an electric motor. It provides a linear motion via a motor driven ball screw or ACME screw assembly. The linear actuator's load is attached to the end of the screw, or rod. The screw can be direct, belt, or gear driven.

The second one is hydraulic actuator. It is typically involve a hollow cylinder having a piston inserted in it. It uses a hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic fluid cannot be used for energy storage, as a result, another power source must be used to create pressure in the oil. Typically, the term "hydraulic actuator" refers to a device controlled by a hydraulic pump.

Electric actuator is another important kind. There are two categories in use, i.e. stepper motors and direct motors. The former one is driven by a train of electrical pulses, while the latter one is most common in industrial robots.

The fourth type is the piezoelectric actuator. The piezoelectric effect is a property of certain materials in which application of a voltage to the material causes it to expand. These actuators exhibit characteristics like extreme rapid response, and amazing power. Therefore, they can be widely used in the precision opening and closing of valves in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Relatively, as to the above mentioned actuators, the linear actuator is simple in design. It is self contained and can have the minimum of moving parts, but it has low forces. However, the hydraulic actuator may have very high forces. Of course, this kind of actuators also has many disadvantages. For example, they can leak and require the external hydraulics pump, etc.

It is no doubt that actuators can be used in many places. They are used for the automatic control of a variety of valves, as well as other applications requiring high torque precision rotation in a small footprint. Typically, applications of actuators are PC controlled valve actuation, small valve control in production environment, and so on. All in all, their applications are very wide and they are quite important devices in industries.

Even if actuators are usually explained in terms of mechanical implements, muscles are often given as an example of an actuator. Diesel engines are the combined inventions of two specific inventors, Rudolph Diesel and Herbert Akroyd Stuart. The internal engine is strictly from Diesel and the injection system is derived from Stuart. Stuart is best known for his advances in solid injection. Solid injection is derived from compressing fuel to extremely high pressures by means of pumps. It is then forced under pressure through injectors into the combustion chamber. Diesel's original engine injected fuel by means of compressed air into the cylinder. The fuel was atomized and mixed with air and then injected. This was "air-blast" injection. The early models of diesel engines were extremely large and heavy due to the large compressors needed as part of its' fuel injection system. Naval diesels were so large that they needed separate engines just to compress the air required to power the diesels. During the earlier years, the use of diesel engines with automobiles was not feasible.

Today's diesel is a miracle of innovative genius. No longer is the engine serviced by a mechanical fuel pump but by ECM run fuel pumps, which service the individual injectors at the proper and accurate opening times. The distributor pump direct injection method was improved vastly by the Volkswagen Audi group in 1989. The genie in the bottle or the ECM (the electronic control module) made the injection timing, fuel measurement, exhaust recirculation and turbo boost precise and accurate. They provided the incentive for diesels to be marketed to the mass market. Consequently, Volkswagen began selling their Mark 3 Golf TDI very successfully. European automobile manufacturers build common rail direct injector diesel engines, a means where the distributor injection pump is deleted and a high-pressure reservoir stores the fuel at extremely high pressures. The computer-controlled injectors have a precision system actuated by solenoid or even piezo-electric actuators and are used to inject diesel fuel at the correct time. This high performance diesel engine is used primarily for racecars.

So why should someone buy a diesel? Diesel fuel is denser than gasoline by 15%. The diesel engine must be larger in order to put out the same power as a gasoline engine. Electric Actuators: Car Heater Not Working - Blowing Cold Air!

There are several reasons why your car's heater may be blowing cold air, instead of heat. It is important to understand how the heater works in your car before you can begin to try to diagnose why it is not working. First, there is NOT an electric heater element in the heater system in automobiles, like in portable heaters used in the home. The part that transfers heat into the passenger compartment is called a heater core. A heater core can be thought of as a miniature radiator. The car engine's coolant flows through the heater core while the fan (also called a blower), blows air through the heater core fins. When air blows through the heater core fins, it is warmed, therefore warming the passenger compartment.

Start by checking the coolant. As we already said coolant is what warms the heater core. So if the coolant is low, there may not be a sufficient amount of warmth to transfer heat to the air in the passenger compartment. Since it 's cold outside, low coolant may not effect the operating temperature of the engine significantly, so you won't be alerted to a coolant problem by the temperature gage on the instrument panel. Once the coolant is full, feel the heater hoses that go through the firewall. With the engine at normal operating temperature, BOTH of the heater hoses should be hot to the touch. If only one is hot, this indicates there is is a blockage in the heater core or there is air trapped in the heater core. Using a Lisle coolant funnel is helpful in purging the air from the cooling system. If the coolant is really brown, has been neglected, or if "stop leak" has been used at some point, the heater core could be stopped up. The blockage can sometimes be unstopped by removing the heater hoses and using a garden hose with a sprayer to flush the heater core out. If neither of the hoses are hot to the touch, there could also be a malfunctioning heater control valve, if used on the model you're working on. Check for presence of a heater control valve by following the heater hoses back to the engine. Sometimes, a vacuum line could have a break causing there to be no vacuum to operate the valve. Also it should be noted that if this is your first winter with this car (and you're unfamiliar with the car's repair history), the previous owner could have by-passed the heater core because of a leak. When a heater core leaks, usually they wet the passenger side floorboard. The labor cost to change heater cores is usually expensive, so sometimes people will loop the heater hoses and by-pass a leaking heater core instead of repairing it properly.

Next check for proper airflow. After you're sure the heater core is getting hot water flow, read the following information. Doors within the heater case are either controlled by electric actuators, cables or vacuum motors. Adjust the heat control to both extremes while listening for movement of the blend door. With a cable operated heater door it's easiest to hear the door thump when it closes. If the door is not operating, find the door that controls the airflow across the heater core. If there is an electric motor that controls the door, tapping on it can sometimes make it work temporarily for testing purposes. A vacuum operated motor needs vacuum to work, so using a handheld vacuum pump for testing is usually recommended. If the vacuum motor does not hold vacuum, the diaphragm is leaking requiring replacement.
