Types of Linear Actuators and Their Unique Applications

Today, linear actuators find wide-spread applications in different tasks. It can be used in multiple applications such as solar electronic consumer items, commercial satellites, health and medical equipment, lawn and garden applications, agricultural, food preparation devices etc. Basically, linear actuators create motion in a straight (linear) line. This is in contrast to the circular motion that is created by the typical electric motor. For instance, the ejection system in a DVD player needs to make use of a linear actuators.

There are different types of linear actuators that are typically offered by manufacturers. Let's take a look at some of the different series in actuators:

• Ball screw actuators: These actuators combine a ball-screw with a DC motor gearbox. This linear drive system is ready for installation and can be used for several industrial, medical and agricultural applications.

• Acme screw actuators: As opposed to the ball screw actuators, these actuators combine an acme screw with the DC motor gearbox. These are also ready to install, and they are highly preferred when a rugged and reliable performance is expected. These linear actuators are also suitable for applications including but not limited to solar tracking, ventilation, agriculture, medical, ATV, lawn and garden etc.

• Worm drive actuators: These also come equipped with an acme screw. You would typically find them being used in lift chairs, medical and dental equipment, mobility and fitness products etc. These can be chosen with or without their self-control and power supply systems, which are UL approved.

• VSJ series: These are very practical actuators that are available with an acme screw in either AC or DC versions. For instance, they can be found in treadmills, floor cleaning equipment, home health care equipment and several other industrial machines.

• VI series: Such actuators can be chosen in acme or ball screw varieties. They offer exceeding versatility making them suitable for different operations relating to medical equipment, lawn and garden equipment, agricultural and ATVs. They can be bought in AC or DC versions depending on specific requirements.

• VMD series: These actuators are very compact and hence are very useful in certain food preparation devices. In short, they are ideal for light load applications. In addition, they are also used in office and automotive applications.

Apart from the above mentioned types of Linear Actuators, there are chances that industries and OEMs might need something extra. In such a case, customization is the best option. You can either send in a fresh design or idea to your chosen manufacturer or suggest modifications to an existing model. Customization of linear actuators goes a long way in increasing your overall operational efficiency.

Basics of Linear Actuators

A linear actuator is a part of motion control systems. Various forms of energy like mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic are used for running these actuators. Linear motion actuators find maximum usage in factory automation and robotics.

There are various forms of energy that run actuators. These forms of energy include, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical. Linear actuators are used a lot in robotics and factory automation.

Linear motion actuator is used for converting rotational motion into linear motion. There are different types of motors like DC brush, stepper and induction motors that can be used as linear actuators. Usage of these motors varies according to the requirement of the application and the load capacity of the actuator.

For example, if a linear actuator is using integral horsepower AC induction motor, it can be used to convert the motion of large valves in refineries. Because, in such cases high speed and force are more important that the move resolution and accuracy of the actuator.

Principle of operation is the basic concept behind design of linear servo actuators. Most of the electro-magnetic actuators come with lead screw and lead nut; whereas, others come with a ball nut and screw. In both the cases, screw is either connected to manual control knob or to the motor directly or via series of gears.

Some of the lead screws come with multiple starts, which mean many threads alternating on the single shaft. This makes more space for adjustment between screw and thread pitch that defines the load carrying capacity and extension speed of the motor.

Because of extreme competition, manufacturers are making integrated actuators that are efficient, simple and also improve the over functionality.

What make linear actuators better in comparison to other motors are their faster speed, higher accuracy and greater acceleration. These are used for gantry axes, general purpose position, gantry axes and assembly machines. Linear stages are specially meant to be used in adverse conditions and act as replacement against other hazardous actuators for performing the job.

Other than linear actuators, DC actuators are also used for performing similar applications. These run smoothly and don't produce much noise. Many DC actuators available in the market are water proof. Buyers can opt for standard as well as customized range of actuators depending on their need and budget.
Linear actuators come in different shapes and sizes, so that they can be used for anything in just every industry.

Linear Actuators for Optimum Solutions in the Housing and Automobile Industry

You have often heard about the uses of actuators across different types of industries. But apart from heavy duty industrial use, linear actuators are also used in many other applications such as satellites, construction industry, housing industry, recreational vehicles and myriad other uses. In this article, we shall take a look at how these actuators have played a crucial role in making processes faster and more efficient because of their presence in these industries.

Satellites
For several years, linear actuators have been used in conjunction with satellites-be it home use satellites that people install on the roof of their home, or the bigger satellite signal transmission centers. They are reliable and also easy to use in this particular application. These actuators usually have built in limit switches for better efficiency. Many of these actuators are also fitted with sensors for better quality satellite beam reception. While a major part of the body of the actuator is made of metal, these actuators come with a plastic pilot guide, which helps in preventing metal to metal contact between the tubes. Do check if you actuator for satellite use has specially made water drains and vents to protect it in sub zero temperatures.

Housing
The linear actuators to be used in this sector come equipped with a coupler and jack system. They can be ordered as 50-60 degree units. If you have heavy-duty requirements, then you can order actuator models to suit the same. Their frame height can also be adjusted for use in different construction applications. Most homes today are heavy and hence, actuators that are needed for such homes should be equipped with a heavy duty jack. Ideally, the actuators to be used in this sector should be FEMA approved so that you can be sure about their safety and reliability. If you actuator is corrosion protected without the use of paint, it will help reduce the chances of smoke and fumes during welding.

Automobiles
Linear Actuators are often combined with gear boxes to give you a very smooth and extremely easy-to-use manual actuation set-up. Multiple units can be interconnected in this case and they, in turn can be used to drive more than one actuator. This set-up is just perfect when it comes to performing tasks such as opening multiple windows, or for greenhouses and even when it comes to climate control-based storage meant for vegetables or live stock. Ideally, these actuators should also have adapters that are available to mount and should have mounting holes on the dimension of each of its surface. In such applications, these actuators are used in combination with DC gear motor.

Apart from this, linear actuators can also be used for recreation vehicles and can be combined with different gear boxes for maximum versatility. You can run a search on the internet to find leading manufacturers of these actuators to suit all your needs.

Linear Actuator and Its Types

A linear actuator is a machine or assembly of various tools that creates linear force and motion using an externally applied energy source. They are primary blocks for shaping live wire automation equipment. The external energy source may be as varied as mechanical, hydraulic, Pneumatic, Piezoelectric and Electro-mechanical. Mechanical actuators convert rotary motion of a general or stub acme screw thread or worm gear into linear movement through generating mechanical force. An ideal example is an automobile jack or scissor jack that is of great utility. Mechanical linear actuators also assist to arrange lasers and optical devices, as well as the sequence of rotary stages, linear stages, and other positioning instrumentation. There are another advanced category of linear actuators with the enhanced power of a digital encoder or a Linear Voltage Displacement Transducer (LVDT) to ensure in accurately positioning the linear actuator for the requisite function.

Hydraulic actuators are also popularly recognized as hydraulic cylinders that generally involve a hollow cylinder with a piston in it. The two ends of the piston are alternately pressurized and de-pressurized to result in controlled accurate linear displacement of the piston. The part connected to the piston also displaces as a result. The linear dislodging is along the axis of the piston or the cylinder only. This model is based on the hydraulics principles. A hydraulic car jack is an example of a manually operated hydraulic actuator.

Pneumatic systems are extensively used in industry, where factories are commonly plumbed with compressed air or other compressed inert gases. This is because a centrally-located and electrically-powered compressor that powers cylinders and other pneumatic devices through solenoid valves is often able to provide motive power in a cheaper, safer, more flexible, and more reliable way than a large number of electric motors and actuators.

There are certain industrial sectors in which factories are usually plumbed with compressed inert gases or compressed air. The principle is accepted as an electrically-powered and centrally-located compressor which powers cylinders and other pneumatic devices by solenoid valves that on most of the occasion are effective in producing motive power that is economical, safer, and more dependable than a large number of electric motors and actuators. Pneumatic actuators also popularly known as pneumatic cylinders resemble hydraulic actuators except for the fact that they use compressed gas to generate pressure instead of any liquid.

Piezoelectricity is the electrical charge which is deposited in solid materials like crystals, a few types of ceramics, and biological elements such as bone, DNA and a variety of proteins in response to applied mechanical strain. Piezoelectricity signifies electricity derived by generating pressure. The Greek terms piezo or piezein which means to squeeze or press, and electric or electron that stands for fossilized tree resin (not sap), with wonderful color and natural organic beauty since Neolithic times, one of the earliest source of electric charge. Piezoelectricity is the direct procurement from the piezoelectric effect. The piezoelectric effect is considered as the linear electromechanical interaction between the mechanical and the electrical state in crystalline materials with no inversion symmetry. The piezoelectric effect is a reversible process in compounds or elements exhibiting the direct piezoelectric effect (the internal generation of electrical charge developing from an applied mechanical force) and also shows the reverse piezoelectric effect (the internal generation of a mechanical force coming out from an applied electrical field).

Electro-mechanical actuators are simple variations of mechanical actuators with the control knob or handle replaced with an electric motor. Rotary motion of the motor generates linear displacement of the actuator. Medical equipment, furniture, consumer products, hobby design and any other products where automation is necessary uses linear actuators. Linear actuators are a boon as far as automation is concerned and its use in applicable functions raises productivity and reduces overall production cost.

How Are Electric Linear Actuators Better Than Manual Actuators?

Many of us take linear actuators to be a synonym for electric actuators or dc motors. But in reality, any device or equipment assisting in the linear motion is called a linear actuator. Linear actuators are widely used in industrial settings and various mechanical systems such as hospital desks, office desks, adjustable levers etc.

But what is important to understand is that there are two types of the linear form of actuators: Manual and Electric. The manual form of actuators help in initiating a linear motion or in its assistance with the effort of the user or manual force; whereas, electric forms are automatic or semi-automatic and do not require any manual assistance. Electric actuators help in reducing the effort required in manual actuators and also perform the task more efficiently.

The electric actuators are the common actuators in use in the industrial sectors. Most industrial application are dependent on electric actuators that have a DC motor that is required to use the electrical energy and convert the same into linear motion energy. They are ideal for lifting light loads and function in tandem with the use of lifting columns, switches, brackets etc. In most industrial set ups and application systems, electric form of actuators are preferred over their manual counterparts, let's find out why and in what respect:

Reduces manual effort
The use of the electric form of actuators reduces manual effort to a considerable extent. One is not required to use extra effort in terms of operating a system or machinery that has actuators operational on electric DC motors. The use of the 12v DC motor in the actuator helps in the conversion of electrical energy into linear motion; hence, reducing the force or strain required to make that motion possible.

Better position control
The use of electric motors in actuators helps in having a better control of position in a mechanical or electrical industrial system. Most linear form of actuators working on electrical mechanism using 12V DC motors, help in easier position control than their manual counterpart. These actuators are available in different strokes as well as different sizes. There is difference in the force applied as well as the size.

Versatile and flexible
Most electric actuators find usage in different types of industrial as well as routine life usage. They may not be as common as the manual form of actuator; however, electric linear actuators are used by different industries and profession in order to improve their efficiency and performance. The properties such as high performance and time-saving aspect of these actuators make them an industry favorite for production and different industrial mechanisms.

Robot Linear Actuators

Converting potential energy into mechanical energy is a hot field of study in science. Actuators are the devices that scientists study that convert different forms of energy into mechanical energy or motion. Not only are actuators a hot topic of study in robotics, but they also have benefits in medicine as well. Scientists believe that the more they can improve on actuators, the more it will benefit all of mankind.

The method in which a linear actuator works is that there is a motor that rotates a drive screw using a synchronous timing belt drive. There are some linear actuators can also use a worm gear or direct drive. Whatever the type of linear actuator, the turning of the screw pushes a drive nut along the screw, which then pushes the rod out. Spinning the screw in the opposite direction will retract the rod. The drive screw is either an ACME or ball thread or is belt-driven which is what gives the machine its motion. A cover over the screw protects the screw nut from environmental elements and contamination thereby allowing for the machines use continually without the chance of it getting gummed up. Thrust bearings allow the screw to turn freely under loaded conditions and gives the linear actuator its strength.

Linear actuators usually serve as part of motion control systems. These days most are run by computers. Control systems, a device that you find linear actuators in, move or control objects. This is made possible by the actuators.

Different forms of energy or energy sources can be used to power an actuator. The most common types of energy used are: hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic. Actuators are most commonly found in the robotics and industrial robotics industry.

Whatever type of actuator you use, it will depend on the required motion you seek. By far and away the most popular type of actuator used is for linear or straight line motion. You also have a few options available when purchasing an actuator. You have stroke length which is the amount of linear motion you get per revolution and also the load rating which is how heavy the object that you are going to move can be. Also you should keep in mind the amount of space an actuator will require. You can also buy a programmable actuator which allows you to program various operational efficiencies of your actuators.

What Is Actuator System?

In lots of cases, we might have been thinking what an actuator really is or maybe we may have heard of many descriptions of what they are really used for. An actuator system in its simplest term is something that’s used to transform energy into motion, it will also be used in other forms such as applying force. I have been researching for the very best description that may be understood by all people and found out that it is basically a mechanical device that takes energy that’s created because of either air, liquid, or electricity and converts this energy into a type of motion. That motion which is generated by the actuator system could be anything from ejecting, clamping or blocking. Actuators are primarily used in industrial or manufacturing applications and they can be use in such things as switches, motors (actuator motor ), and valves (valve actuator).

In my analysis, I found out that there are a number of kinds of actuators and the commonest of them are these which are powered by air. Actuator systems can also be powered by hydraulic or electricity like in the case of rotary actuator and valve actuator. I also found out that there are also electric cylinders such as the air cylinders and hydraulic cylinders with the purpose of converting the hydraulic electricity into motion. Some types of autos use the hydraulic cylinders.

Most of the actuator systems we see today are powered by multiple power source like in the case of the valve actuator. The valve actuator can be powered by both air and electricity. Actuator control systems can create a rotary motion, linear motion or oscillatory motion. That’s actuator systems can create motion only in a single direction either in a circular motion or in the wrong way at some regular intervals. Electric motor actuators differ extensively in their applications and design. We all know of some electric motor actuators that are designed to operate in only two positions both when fully closed or when fully opened whereas other electric motor actuators are placed between the two positions.

We could have seen previously how valve actuators have been ineffective, however presently, electric valve actuators have made progress in the previous couple of years in both their performance and acceptance. The most important improvements that have been made to the electric valve actuators include the level of the resolution, speed and repeatability. In addition, the fail-to-position capability which has been absent with the previous valve actuators is now available and this has been possible because of the advances in the application and reliability technology of capacitors. We may have come across low-power actuator systems that may be run on solar power.

Usually, these actuators which are run by solar power are mostly used for isolating rather than for heavy duties like modulating. For modulating duties, continuous supply of power is required in order to move the actuator motor to the intended set point.

Typically, actuator system is a device capable of converting energy to motion. With the advancement of science and technology, today we can find the application of actuators in almost all the equipments used in our daily life activities.

Linear Actuators

A linear actuator develops force and motion from an energy source. As evident by its name, the force and motion from this energy source is created in a linear manner by the linear actuator. This is contrast to the force and device developed by an electric actuator. The electric actuator develops force and motion rotationally. There are several kinds of linear actuators and linear motion can be achieved by many devices. Below is a list of types of linear actuators. Basically, actuators produce converts various forms of energy into mechanical energy.

Hydraulic linear actuator: Hydraulic cylinders, better known as hydraulic actuators have a hollow cylinder with a piston inserted inside it. As its name suggests, the hydraulic linear actuator is built on hydraulic principle. The controlled precise linear displacement of the piston is achieved with the alternate pressurization and depressurization. This is turn creates a controlled and precise linear displacement in the entity that is connected to the piston. They normally use a hydraulic fluid and a cylinder to create motive force. An incompressible fluid is used to apply a force at one point, which is then transmitted to another point. Hydraulic linear actuators are a low maintenance device. Also, they work well for longer periods of times even in bad environmental conditions. Hydraulic actuators are quite an important part in hydraulic table lifts, used to move around heavy workpieces and hydraulic cab lifts, which are generally used in tow trucks and fire engines.

Electro Mechanical Actuators: Electro mechanical linear actuators are quite similar to mechanical actuators. The only major difference between an electro mechanical and a mechanical linear actuator is that the control knob is an electric motor. The rotary motion is then converted into linear displacement of the actuator.

In a linear actuator, a drive screw is rotated by a motor. This is done with the help of a synchronous timing belt drive or a direct drive or worm gear drive. This turning of the screw helps in pushing the drive nut along the screw. This drive nut in turn pushes the drive nut along the screw, and pushes the rod out. The rotation of the screw in the opposite direction will retract the rod.

The basic concept of linear actuator is to move an object in a straight line. Therefore, you would have to consider the purpose of the project before deciding on a linear actuator. The main aspects that you would have to keep in mind are the stroke length, the speed and the load rating of the actuator, before deciding on the type of actuator that you would be using.

There is a lot of information available about linear actuators all around. The Internet is the best place to get information about linear actuators. You can sign up on any forums or groups to find more information about the various types of linear actuators. Of course, while using linear actuators you will have to keep several things in mind, like safety concerns, environmental hazards and space constraints.

Electric Actuator: Popular Actuator Styles

Actuators have a close relationship with the control valves. Like many mechanical components, they also have various types. Pneumatically operated control valve actuators are the most popular type in use. Besides, the electric, hydraulic, and manual actuators are also widely used. The spring-and-diaphragm pneumatic actuator is most commonly specified due to its dependability and simplicity of design. Pneumatically operated piston actuators provide high stem force output for demanding service conditions. Adaptations of both spring-and-diaphragm and pneumatic piston actuators are available for direct installation on rotary-shaft control valves

Because different types of actuators have different designs and characteristics, it is very necessary to distinguish them from each other. Diaphragm actuators pneumatically operated diaphragm actuators use air supply from controller, positioner, or other source. This kind of actuators is simple, dependable, and economical.

Piston actuators are pneumatically operated using high–pressure plant air to 150 psig, often eliminating the need for supply pressure regulator. This kind of actuators furnishes maximum thrust output and fast stroking speeds. Various accessories can be incorporated to position a double-acting piston in the event of supply pressure failure. These include pneumatic trip valves and lock-up systems.

Compared to other types, electro-hydraulic actuators require only electrical power to the motor and an electrical input signal from the controller. Electro-hydraulic actuators are ideal for isolated locations where pneumatic supply pressure is not available but where precise control of valve plug position is needed. Units are normally reversible by making minor adjustments and might be self-contained, including motor, pump, and double-acting hydraulically operated piston within a weatherproof or explosion-proof casing.

The next one is the manual actuator. It is useful where automatic control is not required, but where ease of operation and good manual control is still necessary. They are often used to actuate the bypass valve in a three-valve bypass loop around control valves for manual control of the process during maintenance or shutdown of the automatic system. Manual actuators are available in various sizes for both globe-style valves and rotary-shaft valves. They are much less expensive than automatic actuators

Rack and pinion designs provide a compact and economical solution for rotary shaft valves. Because of backlash, they are typically used for on–off applications or where process variability is not a concern. Traditional electric actuator designs use an electric motor and some form of gear reduction to move the valve. Through adaptation, these mechanisms have been used for continuous control with varying degrees of success.

Electric Linear Actuators - The Rotary Motion Producer

Mechanical energy is an area of science that is making strides every day. The study of how actuators produce mechanical motion by converting various forms of energy into mechanical energy is a source of great exploration. Science finds new ways to make use of actuators every day including for medical purposes. Many scientists believe that the more they study these seemingly simple machines, the more they will discover ways of helping mankind.

The way in which a linear actuator works is that there is a motor that rotates a drive screw using a synchronous timing belt drive. Some linear actuators can also use a worm gear drive or direct drive. Which ever the choice, the turning of the screw pushes a drive nut along the screw, which in turn pushes the rod out and the rotating the screw in the opposite direction will retract the rod. According to the Association of Sciences, the drive screw is either an ACME or ball thread or is belt-driven which is what gives the machine its motion. A cover tube protects the screw nut from environmental elements and contamination thus allowing for the machines use continually without the chance of it getting gummed up. Radial thrust bearings permit the screw to rotate freely under loaded conditions and gives the linear actuator its strength.

Linear actuators usually serve as part of motion control systems. These days most are run by computers. Control systems, a device that you find linear actuators in, move or control objects. This is made possible by the actuators.

There are various forms of energy that run actuators. These forms of energy include, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical. Linear actuators are used a lot in robotics and factory automation.

Linear motion is when an object moves in a straight line. This is the basic concept that drives the linear actuator. One has to stop and consider when choosing a linear actuator which type they need to fit the purpose of their project. Some things to keep in mind are the speed, stroke length and load rating of the actuator. Programmability of the actuator is also a factor especially when the application will be one that requires specialized detail. A linear actuator can be used in just about any forum. Ask yourself some questions when attempting to choose the right one for your project such as are there particular safety mechanisms required, environmental concerns to be addressed or space issues?

Electric Actuators: Bosch Opts for Vitronic’s Inspection Technology!

By: Malcolm Smith
VINSPEC in use at Bosch
Bosch is using six VINSPEC automated inspection units from Vitronic to ensure the flawless production of its new piezoelectric actuators. Piezoelectric actuators work in car engine fuel injection systems to reduce fuel consumption, noise, and carbon emissions. They make for clean, efficient running vehicles.

What is piezoelectricity?
Piezoelectricity is the ability of some materials to generate an electric field in response to applied mechanical stress. This effect is reversible – such materials produce mechanical stress in response to an applied electric field.

How do piezoelectric actuators work?
A vehicle’s fuel injection system injects pressurised fuel into the engine cylinder through a valve in precise quantities at precise intervals. Traditional injection systems open and close this valve using electromagnets. Bosch’s new actuators use piezoelectricity to control the valve quicker and more accurately than traditional systems, which makes for an efficient engine.

Foil printing
Bosch’s new actuators consist of stacks of special piezoelectric ceramic foils printed with strip electrodes, and guide marks to ensure accurate stacking. After printing, a robotic gripper deposits foils on a conveyor. Fast line-scan cameras from Vitronic capture high-resolution images of each as they travel along.
The first VINSPEC system inspects these images to identify flaws on foils, such as holes, missing print, and bleeding. It also checks the position of the strip electrodes and guide marks. If the foils pass all inspections, they are dried and sent for stacking. Faulty foils are unusable, so VINSPEC immediately discards them.

Precise automated stacking
Robotic grippers then stack several foils into a block on a positioning table. Accurate stacking is essential to ensure actuators function correctly. By analysing images acquired by its cameras, the second VINSPEC system identifies a foil’s guide marks and calculates its position, before instructing the robotic grippers to stack the foils precisely. Completed stacks are laminated. This causes the foils to harden and form solid blocks. Without using the machine vision system VINSPEC it wouldn’t be possible to produce functional actuators.

Raw actuator processing
Next, a specially coated saw automatically divides the hardened blocks into bars and then into so-called ‘raw actuators’. Cutting bars into raw actuators is a delicate process. An incorrect cut can interrupt the strip electrodes and render actuators unusable. The third VINSPEC system captures photographic images of foil blocks, measures each bar to the nearest micrometer, and coordinates the saw to product precise cuts.
The fourth VINSPEC system inspects the function and quality of the raw actuators before sending them for further processing. Checks include actuator dimensions and electrode position. Only flawless actuators pass to the next production stage.

Final production stages
Bosch applies a layer of insulation finish and electrical strip contacts to actuators before installing them into the fuel injectors. Finish must be evenly applied and bubble free. Strip contacts require careful soldering and must be clear of finish. Defects lead to short circuits, which render actuators unusable. The fifth and sixth VINSPEC units monitor these processes, and immediately discard faulty actuators.

Complete control

Electric Actuator

By: varalakshmi

Actuators are used for the automation of industrial valves and can be used in all kinds of technical process plants such as wastewater treatment plants, power plants and even refineries. The valves to be automated vary both in design and dimension. The diameters of the valves range from a few inches to a few meters.

Multi-turn actuators are required for the automation of multi-turn valves. One of the major representatives of this type is the gate valve. "A multi-turn actuator is an actuator which transmits to the valve a torque for at least one full revolution. It is capable of withstanding thrust."

Part-turn actuators are required for the automation of part-turn valves. Major representatives of this type are butterfly valves and ball valves. "A part-turn actuator is an actuator which transmits a torque to the valve for less than one full revolution. It need not be capable of withstanding thrust."

Currently there is no international standard describing linear actuators or linear thrust units. A typical representative of the valves to be automated is the control valve. Just like the plug in the bathtub is pressed into the drain, the plug is pressed into the plug seat by a stroke movement. The pressure of the medium acts upon the plug while the thrust unit has to provide the same amount of thrust to be able to hold and move the plug against this pressure. Most of the linear actuators used are pneumatic diaphragm actuators. They are characterized by a simple design principle and are therefore cost-effective. A compressed air supply is a prerequisite for their use. In case this is not possible, the use of thrust units is recommended which can easily be supplied with power.

Small electric actuators can be used in a wide variety of assembly, packaging and testing applications. Such actuators can be linear, rotary, or a combination of the two, and can be combined to perform work in three dimensions. Such actuators are often used to replace pneumatic cylinders.

Electric actuators: Different Types of Actuators

By: Lois Ling

An actuator is used to put something into automatic action. It is a mechanism by which an agent that can be either an artificial intelligence agent or any other autonomous being acts upon an environment. Meanwhile, it is the final element in a control system that can receive a low power command signal and energy input to expand the command signal as appropriate to produce the required output.

Like other things, there are also various types of actuators. The first type I have to mention is the linear actuator. It is a device that applies force in a linear manner, as opposed to rotationally like an electric motor. It provides a linear motion via a motor driven ball screw or ACME screw assembly. The linear actuator's load is attached to the end of the screw, or rod. The screw can be direct, belt, or gear driven.

The second one is hydraulic actuator. It is typically involve a hollow cylinder having a piston inserted in it. It uses a hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic fluid cannot be used for energy storage, as a result, another power source must be used to create pressure in the oil. Typically, the term "hydraulic actuator" refers to a device controlled by a hydraulic pump.

Electric actuator is another important kind. There are two categories in use, i.e. stepper motors and direct motors. The former one is driven by a train of electrical pulses, while the latter one is most common in industrial robots.

The fourth type is the piezoelectric actuator. The piezoelectric effect is a property of certain materials in which application of a voltage to the material causes it to expand. These actuators exhibit characteristics like extreme rapid response, and amazing power. Therefore, they can be widely used in the precision opening and closing of valves in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Relatively, as to the above mentioned actuators, the linear actuator is simple in design. It is self contained and can have the minimum of moving parts, but it has low forces. However, the hydraulic actuator may have very high forces. Of course, this kind of actuators also has many disadvantages. For example, they can leak and require the external hydraulics pump, etc.

It is no doubt that actuators can be used in many places. They are used for the automatic control of a variety of valves, as well as other applications requiring high torque precision rotation in a small footprint. Typically, applications of actuators are PC controlled valve actuation, small valve control in production environment, and so on. All in all, their applications are very wide and they are quite important devices in industries.

Electric actuators

By: Gareth Hoyle
Electric actuators have been with us for some time but what is the purpose of units such as this?

It's a good question and in many industries Electric actuators are used to control automation processes within industrial valves. Reliability is a key issue that has to be considered when you are choosing new Electric actuators.  Plenty of trust is placed in this item of equipment and quality has to be assured from leading stockists of products of this nature. Many units have to work in extreme conditions and they have to be waterproof as a result. The designs of actuators can incorporate anti-corrosive casings to help combat this problem.

What features can you find on Electric actuators?

This might vary depending on the make and model of the unit.  Some come with manual overrides and status lights, along with plug and play capabilities. One useful feature that does come in handy is an external wiring diagram and updated versions of Electric actuators often come with this as standard.  Engineers working on site should find the modern versions of Electric actuators easy to install compared to the units of old.

Different types of Electric actuators

A number of versions are available and two of the most common types are ball valve and butterfly Electric actuators. Within each sub-category further choices can be made in relation to the Electric actuators and it's possible to select 2 way and 3 way units to cater for a client's demands.  With so many variations of actuators on the market at the moment choice is never lacking.

Suppliers of Electric actuators

Are easy to come by and clients looking for replacement products, or new items that are ready for installation, can call on the experience and years of wisdom that tried and tested companies can provide. Technical product knowledge is often useful if you need new Electric actuators but expert advice can always be sought if you get stuck. Certain companies can proudly boast they have many years experience in the supply of Electric actuators. It's this kind of company that you should be looking for when you need new units.

Electric Actuators: How Does Actuators Works?

In actuator valve engineering and design, it is essential for engineers, designers, and manufacturers to fully understand the aspects and processes of using this particular product that would eventually help build effective engineering designs in a safe and efficient manner.

One of the most significant products of the company would be the actuators. To make this technical term simpler, an actuator is a device that transforms or converts energy into motion. Also applied as a force, an actuator usually is a mechanical apparatus that takes energy, normally constructed by liquid, air, or electricity, and converts that into a specific kind of motion. This motion can relate to anything from clamping, blocking, to ejecting. These actuators are normally used in industrial applications or in manufacturing, and may also be used in different objects such as motors, switches, valves, and pumps.

From all the actuators available in the market, the most common type would be the ones that are powered by the air, also known as the air cylinder or the pneumatic cylinder. These air cylinders are air tight, usually made out of metal, which uses the energy of compressed air in order to move a piston. In addition, air cylinders are usually used in assembly processes and in manufacturing. On the other hand, grippers, normally used in robotics, use actuators powered by compressed air in order to work similar to the human touch.

Electricity or hydraulics can be a source of power for actuators. Much like there are air cylinders, there are also electric cylinders and hydraulic cylinders where the cylinder converts electricity or hydraulics into motion, and hydraulic cylinders are often used in several types of automobiles. Most of the actuators available have more than one type of power source. For example, solenoid valves can have the ability to be powered by both electricity and air. Electricity powers the solenoid, and the solenoid, powered by air, actuates the valve. Another option for this would be that the solenoid can be powered by both electricity and the hydraulics.
Whether in a linear motion, a rotary motion, or in an oscillatory motion, actuators can still be used, that is if they can create the motion with only one direction, in a circular motion, or in an opposite direction at normal intervals. Hydraulic and air cylinders can also be classified as single acting, which means that the energy source that justifies the movement in one direction, and that a certain spring is used for the other direction. Having these interchanged, these cylinders can act as double as an acting cylinder, which means that the energy is used in two different directions. Even if actuators are usually explained in terms of mechanical implements, muscles are often given as an example of an actuator. Energy, which is created by eating carbohydrates, is converted by the muscle, which in this case would be the actuator, and transform it into motion, such as playing basketball.
